A community-wide project in the village of Wye, Kent, is showing that it is possible to live more sustainably by focusing on two issues - food and waste - two of the most complex problems of modern life.

WyeCycle is the ten-year old community business that is making the difference. They have managed to persuade 90 per cent of the 3,000 residents of Wye (and neighbouring Brook) to recycle their waste on a regular basis. They have now reduced municipal waste collections to just once a fortnight, with the savings made by the local authority being paid to WyeCycle.
WyeCycle is also supporting local food production and distribution, through encouraging organic growing, farmers' markets and free home delivery services. Local food production and distribution cuts down on the need for treating fruit and vegetables with preservatives to prolong shelf life, reduces packaging, and cuts down on transport costs (both financial and environmental).
