Overview

The Strule Arts Centre, beautifully crafted in mainly local materials, is a striking new building at the heart of the regeneration in Omagh, reflecting a renewed civic pride and confidence.

Constructed on the site of the old Town Hall, the project, together with the revival of the riverside and a new pedestrian bridge, is a key component in the Council’s wider master plan.

The centre boasts a 400-seat auditorium, a gallery and exhibition space, as well as a café, a tourist information centre, facilities for specialist art workshops, dance studios and a second 120-seat theatre.

The building has helped to fulfil the Council’s objectives of creating a night-time economy, opening up back areas and making much better use of the River Strule as a feature of the town. Some special considerations regarding flood levels and skylines have also been successfully resolved.

In a town already well known for its effective use of sustainable energy, the new centre employs solar technologies and the effective use of natural light to reduce its carbon impacts

The building won the overall award in the annual RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards scheme earlier this year, when the judges commented that the Strule Arts Centre was “well designed and used, making a positive contribution to the civic, social and economic life of a town which in the not too distant past was sp tragically devastated by a car bomb.”

As the regional winner, Strule Arts Centre will now be listed as an entrant in the UK RICS Awards, to be announced in London during October.
