Role of commissioners

Our active board of Commissioners play a central role to the SDC, developing and steering our work programmes. Commissioners include the SDC Chair, Jonathon Porritt, and four Vice Chairs who focus on developing relationships across Whitehall and with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Five steering group chairs guide our programme areas.
Commissioners are selected to provide a wide range of expertise and experience, and are drawn from commerce, youth work, academia, trade unions, politics and government, non-profit, and grassroots action.
Appointments
Commissioners are appointed by the Prime Minister in agreeement with First Ministers in Scotland and Wales. They are normally appointed for three year terms, and serve for a maximum of 10 years.
Posts are advertised in the national press and candidates are short-listed according to the competencies of the post. When making the appointments, Government takes into account the need to draw expertise from across the UK; from business, local government and non-government sectors; and to reflect the diversity of the UK population.
