Helping the NHS to be a Good Corporate Citizen

Good Corporate CitizenNHS Good Corporate Citizenship Assessment Model launched

This interactive web-based assessment model helps the NHS improve its contribution to sustainable development.

Sir Nigel Crisp, Chief Executive of the NHS: “All organisations providing healthcare stand to benefit from behaving as good corporate citizens. It offers the opportunity to promote health, tackle health inequalities, save money and contribute to a healthy environment.”

As the largest employer in Europe spending £65 billion a year, the NHS is a powerful economic presence. This model helps NHS organisations to look at how they buy goods and services, build and manage buildings and land, manage their waste and transport, employ people and work in partnership with others to contribute to healthy local populations.

It is a part of the Department of Health’s programme for good corporate citizenship and is a commitment in the Choosing Health public health white paper. In addition to the self-assessment ‘test’ it contains a huge bank of resources and case studies, as well as workshop and communications materials to help people use the model in their organisations. It is designed to help NHS organisations use their corporate resources to promote health and sustainable development, helping to ensure the long-term viability of the NHS.
