Influencing existing government learning frameworks

National School of Government (NSG)

Whitehall Road signThe Whitehall team is working closely with NSG to “SD-proof” the curriculum of training and skills development offered to civil servants - at all levels of seniority.. We aim to ensure that all government staff are equipped with the understanding and ability to take a sustainable development approach in their work. To date, our work has been focussed in the following areas: policy making and strategy, leadership and engagement.

Early outputs from this collaboration have included a Capability for Sustainability Business Breakfast, which brought together Permanent Secretaries with private sector executives already taking a leading role in sustainable development. The discussion prompt for the event outlines the joint SDC/NSG/Defra position on Capability for Sustainability in the Civil Service :

Government Skills

Government Skills is the Sector Skills Council for Central Government. Government Skills will be launching a new skills strategy for the civil service this spring. The SDC is working closely with Government Skills as it seeks to develop new skills specifications with Heads of Profession in government, for example in economics and procurement.
