The SDC and UK Government have agreed a common approach to assessing whether or not a policy delivery is sustainable - these are the 'Five principles of sustainable development'.
The principles are outlined in the UK Framework for Sustainable Development 'One future - different paths', agreed by the UK Government (including Northern Ireland), Welsh Assembly and Scottish Executive and reflected in their strategies.

These principles form the basis of national sustainable development strategies/action plans. The UK Government, for example, adopted the principles in 'Securing the future' which was developed in parallel to the shared framework document in March 2005.
