Opportunity for work placement with the Sustainable Development Commission

We are looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic person with an interest in sustainable development to join our Healthy People and Sustainable Places team for a short-term work placement across September and October.

The successful applicant will join a team that strives for excellence and wants to make working life as enjoyable as possible. The placement will provide them with a unique insight into the opportunities and challenges faced by government and the public sector as it seeks to lead by example and put sustainable development into practice.

We will also seek, in a flexible way, to provide them with a range of learning and development opportunities, such as meeting and working with SDC commissioners and secretariat, attending key meetings and making important contributions to SDC projects.
We are looking for somebody who is analytical, professional, organised and has excellent teamworking and communication skills. Study or experience in a relevant field would also be an advantage. Most of all, the successful candidate should have a real interest in current and emerging sustainable development issues.
The role will involve a combination of administrative support and research and analysis. On the administrative side, the key areas of responsibility will include managing and updating information systems, such as databases and filing systems, and providing support for events and meetings. On the research and analysis side, there will be opportunities to be involved in a range of activities and projects, including researching and developing case studies.

Placement details
The placement will start from 1 September and finish on 31 October 2008. The postholder will report to the Policy Analyst - Local Governance. There are no line management responsibilities for the postholder.

This placement is offered as a short term appointment at Defra's Administrative Officer grade, with a salary of £20,274 pro rata. Annual leave is 30 days per year, plus 2.5 additional Civil Service privilege days and will also be pro rata'd for the term of this appointment.

We are open to flexible working arrangements, including secondment.

Other than in the case of secondments, SDC posts are only open to:
• UK or EU nationals or nationals of states in the European Economic Area;

Watchdog Policy Analyst

Salary range £24,439 – 28,846 (Short term contract or secondment for 6 months)
Defra Executive Officer grade
Based in the Watchdog Team at the SDC’s Whitehall office


We are seeking a Watchdog Policy Analyst (Executive Officer grade) to contribute to the Commission’s scrutiny of Government departments, Devolved Administrations and the wider public sector. You will support the development of a fair and transparent process for evaluating Government’s progress in delivering sustainable development in the UK.

In particular, you will contribute to the assessment of the departmental Sustainable Development Action Plans (SDAPs), which set out the contribution of each Government department to the delivery of their commitments and goals as set out in the UK’s Sustainable Development Strategy, Securing the Future. You will carry out assessments using a defined methodology, liaise with policy staff, Commissioners and contacts in Government departments and provide support for other Watchdog projects.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help shape the SDC’s development of its strengthened watchdog role, work closely with a wide range of Government departments and Executive Agencies to promote sustainable development, and work with like-minded and enthusiastic people towards a shared goal.

Health Policy Analyst (RCRE 1043)

Through advocacy, advice, capability building and scrutiny, we help to put sustainable development at the core of government policy.

Our Healthy Futures programme, funded by the Department of Health aims to promote the interplays between health and sustainable development in government policy, and to encourage the NHS to maximise the contribution of its corporate activities and policies to local economies, communities and the environment.

What is the role?
We are seeking a Health Policy Analyst to develop and deliver key health projects. Responsibilities include leading a significant update of the Good Corporate Citizenship Assessment Model and building on our advocacy of sustainable development in the NHS. You will engage with NHS leaders and opinion formers, produce publications/articles and present at conferences.

You will confidently lead a work area with a high degree of independence and deliver to tight deadlines. You will quickly build influential relationships with a wide range of people and work effectively in a team. You will have good problem solving and analytical abilities, and a keen interest in and commitment to sustainable development and/or the health sector.

Senior Engagement Analyst

We are seeking a Senior Engagement Policy Analyst to lead our small engagement team and develop the engagement work programme. This will include providing strategic leadership to high impact projects on engagement policy, contributing engagement expertise to other SDC policy work, working closely with government to shape and deliver engagement objectives and developing SDC capability on engagement.

Working with and through others you will be able to provide strategic direction to engagement work. You will be adept at dealing with conflicting priorities and tight deadlines across a programme, managing and reviewing team performance accordingly. You will be able to build collaborative relationships with government departments and others to influence policy development towards sustainable development and engagement thinking.

Strategic Assessment Policy Analyst (RCRE 1062)

The Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) is the Government’s independent official advisor on sustainable development, reporting directly to the Prime Minister, the First Ministers for Wales and Scotland, and the First and Deputy First Ministers for Northern Ireland. Through advocacy, advice, appraisal and capability building we help put sustainable development at the core of Government policy. We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our Watchdog team.

You will play a key role in holding Government Departments and other key stakeholders to account where sustainable development is concerned. This role offers the opportunity to work within a team to make a real difference to how we take sustainable development forward in Britain. You will be offered opportunities to strengthen and acquire skills and lead on agreed areas of work relating to sustainable development.

We are looking for an intelligent, hard-working individual with an interest and preferably experience in sustainable development. You will be able to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, and you have a good understanding of Government and how it operates.
